I think you hit on another topic that ties into the issue Mike. "[I]f it’s tailored properly to benefit users and not advertisers". Well, Google would like to know where you are in the world, and they already have patents to show locally targetted advertisements. Search Ads are Google's lifeblood, it's what allows them such flexibility and creativity to create things like Google Maps, Chrome and Google Earth. If we do get the type of hyper personallized, intimate search, then we can expect hyperpersonalized, intimate advertisement.

I really don't think it's scary that Google could piece together my life. I think if anything it would ensure I would find the kinds of things I was looking for. It would make it possible for me to enjoy the internet that much more.

I spend 8 hours at work on the net and another good chunk of my life on it when I get home. If Google could make my online experience exactly what I wanted I would be in heaven.

Sure there is the privacy issue, but if it's tailored properly to benefit users and not advertisers I don't know that there is anything to be worried about. I think people need to stop fearing Google and start thinking about how they can enhance our online experience. It's not that Google is trying to monopolize anything, it's that no one is bright enough to compete with them.

In terms of Google retaining annonymous information they now only hold your I.P tracking information for 9 months... instead of 18-24. However, note in that article that "we may not be able to use precisely the same methods for anonymizing as we do after 18 months"...

Naturally, as you mentioned, this is a large volumn of information, but since Google is commited to creating new Server farms around the world
Google is exponentially increasing it's computing capacity. With Fios and wireless internet improving connection speeds for traditional and new platforms it's not so crazy that you could be plugged into the "cloud" everyday in everyway.

"While it might be scary that Google COULD piece together your life, interests, dislikes, habits, hobbies and so on; remember that this is probably unlikely that it’ll be done. The computing resources needed to do so would be absolutely insane."

Then again... why on earth would they care about you? Unless of course you are an evil marketer or something like that.

I'm guessing that Google knows a great deal about each and everyone of us already. Understanding that data or picking it out of their many different products (Google Search, Adwords, Adsense, Blogger, Base, Gmail etc) is another question entirely.

Now the information used on an anonymous basis by Google to further improve search results is an entirely different story.

Google being as big as it is has a lot of data to crunch and while they may have everything they want to know about you due to your involvement online or even someones mention of those that don't touch computers,

Ken,
If Google can "bucket test" Digg like Icon's I think they may just bypass the whole spending money problem :P

John,
Oh yes he's cute...a search monkey on your back...

Maybe that's why Google wants to buy Digg...to integrate "“Digg like” icons that appeared next to search results"...I'd digg it.
